Guangzhou Chen Clan Academy | 陈家祠 | Chen Family Ancestral Hall | Well-known For Its Exquisite Decoration And Grandeur
It was jointly built by Chen from 72 counties in Guangdong Province in the late Qing Dynasty. It is a famous ancestral temple building in Guangdong Province. The architectural structure of the Chen Family Ancestral Hall can be divided into three axes and three entrances, with a construction area of 8,000 square meters.
Each entrance of the ancestral hall is separated by a courtyard and is cleverly connected by corridors and silos. There are a total of nine halls and six courtyards.
The halls and pavilions are full of fiction and reality, and they are majestic. The overall layout of the ancestral hall is symmetrical.
“Juxian Hall” is the main hall on the central axis of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and the center of the entire architectural composition of the Guangzhou Chen Clan Academy. The front of the hall is a wide stone terrace surrounded by stone fences embedded with iron flowers.
The ancestral hall was built, and the Juxian Hall was used for gatherings of tribesmen. Later, it was converted into an ancestral hall, and the side rooms on both sides were used for the academy.
Various decorations such as wood carvings, stone carvings, brick carvings, clay sculptures, pottery sculptures, and iron casting craftsmanship are all over the roof eaves, halls, courtyards, and corridors inside and outside the ancestral hall.
There are both large-scale productions and exquisite small works. The decorative styles are rough and bold, or exquisite and delicate, each with their own characteristics. Especially in the shaping of glazed tile ridges, it is a wide range of classical stories. The collection of local customs is dazzling and beautiful. Unique style.
On the wall in front of the temple, there are six large scroll-like brick sculptures. Each brick sculpture is 4 meters long. It is carved out of blue bricks and then connected into a whole. The three-dimensional, multi-layered picture contains myth Legends, landscape gardens, flowers, fruits, animals, Zhong Ding Yi Ming, etc., are like folk art academies.
The pottery and sculpture craftsmanship are concentrated on the tile ridges on the roofs of the 19 halls; the brick carvings are the largest in the east and west of the exterior walls; the gray sculptures are concentrated on the tile ridges and courtyard corridors, which are made by Nanhai ash plastic artists.
In addition to the beam frame and the gate and the screen of Juxian Hall, the 11 double-layer open-carved shrines in the back seat are tall and tall, including “Sixteenth Year of Guangxu”, “Made by Liu Dechang of Huilan Bridge” and “Made in Yuanchang Street by Taishi” And so on.
